Phonophoresis is a physiotherapy treatment that combines therapeutic ultrasound with topical medication to improve the delivery of active ingredients into the skin and underlying tissues. Ultrasound waves temporarily increase the skin’s permeability, allowing medicated gels, creams or solutions to penetrate more effectively than with topical application alone.
Phonophoresis is commonly used to support the treatment of joint and muscle inflammation, back and spinal discomfort, scar tissue and adhesions, as well as rehabilitation following injuries.
Benefits of the Treatment
- Helps relieve discomfort in the joints, muscles and spine.
- Supports the body’s natural response to inflammation.
- Promotes healthy blood and lymphatic circulation.
- Helps reduce muscle tension.
- Supports the softening of scar tissue and adhesions.
- Promotes the natural healing of tissues following injury or surgery.
Treatment Journey
- The specialist assesses the treatment area and selects the most appropriate medicated gel or cream.
- The active preparation is applied to the skin.
- A therapeutic ultrasound applicator is gently moved over the selected area.
- During the treatment, you may experience a pleasant feeling of warmth or gentle vibration.
- After the session, your specialist provides recommendations for your ongoing treatment plan.
Important Information
Phonophoresis is not recommended in cases of acute infection accompanied by fever, malignant tumours, blood clotting disorders, pregnancy (when treating the abdominal or lower back area), or for guests with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic medical devices.
The treatment is prescribed individually by a SPA VILNIUS Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, based on your health condition and individual needs.
